Oddly, the scanner will sometimes "read" a slide correctly in one test, then in the next change the orientation of the very same slide in the very same position from landscape to portrait or the other way around. In some cases I could fake out the scanner, and reposition the slide in the holder (contrary to the instructions on the holder) after the preview scan, but this is not a viable solution given the number of slides I want to scan.I got a response from Epson Tech fairly quickly, but three rounds of resetting options, running tests and taking screen shots - and hours later, there is no solution, just more variations of the problem. So you need to keeps a dusting brush handy if you have neglected your negatives.I have not used the front-panel buttons because the way I placed it on my desk makes them unhandy, but the included EpsonScan software gives you total control of functionality.I do worry about the film carrier, which seems fragile because Epson put slides and film function on the same carrier (see the second photo.) I would have preferred the solution of my previous Epson scanner, which had separate masks for slides, 35mm film strips, and 120 negs.Well worth the price, especially if it has the stamina of my old Epson 4100 scanner, which gave me more than a decade of reliable service.Epson has apparently discontinued the V370, so when my latest V370 broke (hardware), I was forced to buy the V600 at nearly twice the price.As others have reported, prints get cropped if placed as directed in the corner of the scanning bed.Worse, when I tried to scan standard 35mm slides, the scanner indiscriminately scans them in the wrong orientation (landscape/portrait) - even though they are standard 35mm and placed in the holder as directed. The light it uses to scan negatives requires no warmup time.Each scan is flawless only rarely do I have to adjust the brightness and contrast curve, and only on a previously "impossible" negative (the church ceiling lighted only by windows is just as it was scanned, with no corrections.) It's like it does all the thinking for me.The spot removal function works wonders, though it does add considerably to scan time.
I won't ever get to find out if the hardware is any more durable than the V370 because I don't expect to keep this.None of the 5 scanners (4 V370s and 1 V600) from 3 different vendors came in a box sealed with more than standard packing tape.2 Photos: A: Slides positioned in the holder as directed. But at least it was relatively inexpensive, and I never had any of the software issues I read about in reviews I considered it worth the price for the number of scans I got.

I didn't waste time trying to figure that out. Size copying - The Artificial Intelligence of the programming sometimes would crop a slide that required no cropping because of darkness on the slide, very frustrating because even if you turned the slide it would still crop it. Did I say this was slow at digitizing slides?I digress, focus - the digital pictures came out pretty good, because I didn't have the ability to view the slides on a screen, hence this purchase, I couldn't tell if the slide was slightly out of focus or the scanner made them out of focus (Most of them came out crystal clear) my guess would be the photographer was out of focus. That's 100 hours to complete this task, it took more than that because I wasn't there all the time and missed my 6 minute cycle many times and added more time to my 100 hours.
(With all due respect, it IS "Photo" scanner not a dedicated slide scanner). It IS a good scanner, copying photos are the best and the resolution choices are fantastic especially for the price. Overall - I enjoyed using this scanner once I realized its' shortcomings, and would recommend it to anyone who doesn't have to get a big job done by tomorrow. I would suggest getting a good photo correcting program that you have used before and know how to use to help you. Over exposed slides would scan overexposed and the photo correction program included is not intuitive AT ALL to help you in making the photo look normal. Yeah! Quality of scanned slides - I would say that the quality in color transfer and image capture was excellent, as long as the slide was perfect.
